Key Policies

Specific policies for maintenance and enhancement of the conservation attributes that define HCV areas.

The decision was made in a stakeholder meeting to maintain an undisturbed primary forest block of 3.83 ha which contains high intensity of Biodiversity in Nugahena division belonging to Lowland Wet Evergreen as a HCVF. Many of the endemic Dipterocarpus species, Callophyllum species & Callumus species and some of endemic understory species in the red list were also found in the place.Different & rare mammals such as Loris & some endemic butterflies and fish are too available.

The stakeholders were informed regarding the inherent value & a buffer zone of 50m was marked for protection of the area. Inventorying flora and fauna will be done annually in order to monitor and maintain conservation attributes of the forest. A trend anaylsis of the data recorded will be done to compare previous data & necessary actions will be taken if & when required.

A detailed study conducted by our Forestry Consultant of the Cinchona block in the Muwankande division which consists of at least 100 yrs of undisturbed plantation found unique vegetation that is rare & with long historical value. Cinchona trees growing confined to this pocket of land is not available in any part of the estate, group or outside & therefore was declared as a HCVF at a stakeholder meeting. Boundaries and a buffer zone of 50 m were clearly marked and no trespassing is allowed to protect the land.

Further more the company uses a standardized form for recording of monitoring and evaluation to collect more data on the HCVFs. It is one of policies of the company not to harvest identified HCVFs and to maintain the attributes of the HCVF following the precautionary approaches indicated above.
