People live in the estates and neighboring communities are either Sinhala or Tamil. Buddhism and Hindu are the two main religions of the people. Most of the workers of the plantation live in the plantations with their families and most of them are Tamils. Comparatively, number of female workers is higher than number of male workers. Worker out turns are is less than 3% as the company have been providing comparatively higher wages.
The Lalan Plantations Ltd is the main employer of the local communities with over 3,000 employees throughout the four regions. Each estate is surrounded by local communities who either work with the group or their own cultivated lands. Through a government support program, Lalan willingly released approved land in Udapolla Estate, Udapolla Division, Mahaoya Estate, Glassel Division and Sapumalkande Estate, Cluness Upper Division, Muwankanda, Nottinghill, Keppetigala and Pitiakanda Estates under the PHDT (www.phdt.org ) / NHDA (www.nhda.lk ) Housing Projects for local communities. The company provided additional support in the form of roads, water and electricity to these houses.
The company is providing free medical and welfare facilities to the entire workforce. Further training is provided with internal as well as external resource persons. The concept and the benefits available to workforce have been explained at each training program.
