Rubber, Timber, Coconut and Tea are growing in the lands of Lalan Rubbers Ltd. Extent of which growth is limited by climatic factors and soil fertility. Above two factors are collectively determine the crop suitability to the site. Such environmental limitations are connected with the followings details
The Eco-region The nine estates under the three groups Mahaoya, Sapumalkanda and Udabage are located in the low country wet zone and falls under the Agro ecological region of Low country Wet Zone. These estates located bordering the western slopes of central hills facing directly to the South West Monsoon rains that receive in the month of May to July annually.
The Pitiyakanda group estates at Mawathagama in Kurunegala district are located bordering the north western slopes of the central hills. The rainfall is received from monsoons, South West and North East, but more effective in the North East monsoon during the months of October to December. The number of rainy days is comparatively less when compared to the other groups and distinct dry periods are observed in February March and August September.
Geology The area consists of highly jointed metamorphic rocks and all the rocks belong to Highland complex category. Charnockitic, Granulitic and Quarticitic rocks are prominent in the area.
Soil Red- Yellow Podzolic soils; rolling, hilly & steeply dissected terrain in Estates on Mahaoya, Sapumalkanda and Udabage groups. Calcareous or saline patches and alluvial deposits are not observed. Soils on Estates of Pitiyakanda Group are mainly Red Yellow Podsoles. The two types Reddish Brown earth and red sandy loam are observed in lower slopes.
Landscape Hilly & rugged topography. Steep slopes also observed. Vary from undulating to rolling in estates under three groups at Daraniyagala. Landscape of estates on Pitiyakanda Group is undulating to rolling.
Vegetation type. The natural vegetation category in three groups Mahaoya, Sapumalkanda & Udabage is entirely Tropical Wet Ever Green. The most prominent timber tree species includes Hora ( Dipterocarpus zelanicus), Waldel (Artocarpus nobilis), Etamba ( Mangifera zelanica ), Milla (Vitex pinnata), Naa (Messua ferraya), and Keena ( Callophyllum walkerii) The ground vegetation includes Kekila ( Gleichenia linearis) in open areas and naturally regenerated saplings of main species, in the shady areas. The profusely regenerated exotic species Hawarinuga ( Alstonia macrophylla) has become an invader species in the region.
The vegetation type in the estates on Pitiyakanda Group is mainly Moist Deciduous or Intermediate zone type with certain wet evergreen species confined to low land vegetation along the stream reservations.
Climate of the region. On Mahaoya, Sapumalkanda & Udabage Groups experience both monsoon rains exceeds 3500mm while Ptiyakanda receiveing less rainfall. Temperature is vary from 25 -28 °C
